2026 has proven to be an even more challenging year for the Ukrainian mineral fertilizer market than the previous one. On top of the traditional pressure factors — energy and gas supply instability, hostile attacks on logistics infrastructure, and mobilization risks — a new global factor has emerged: the escalation of the Middle East conflict and the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The global fertilizer price index has risen by 26%, while the cost of urea surged by nearly 54%. According to the National Bank of Ukraine, Ukrainian buyers may overpay approximately $140 million for fertilizers in 2026 due to the Middle East conflict. Farmer demand, meanwhile, remains resilient. In Q1 2026, Ukraine increased its mineral fertilizer imports to 1.19 million tonnes — 33% more than in the same period last year. Domestic production declined by 16% to 790,000 tonnes. Ukraine’s fertilizer market remains one of the most capacious in the world and one of the most vulnerable to external shocks.
