Ukrainian scientists developed the technology to produce Biogas from blue-green waterweed (cyanophyceae) that would allow refining the Dnipro river

Scientists of the Kremenchuk Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi National University (KrNu), Poltava region, have developed a special station that produces biogas from blue-green waterweed (cyanophyceae) which while reproducing cause the Dnipro river to water-bloom. This invention took the first prize in Austria at the contest of scientific projects.

In the opinion of Sergey Degtyar, the scientist from KrNu, this technology not only will allow to refine the main water way of Ukraine but also will generate energy. “With the assistance from my colleagues on the premises of specialized laboratories we have done the qualitative & quantified analysis of the produced biogas and the results have exceeded the expectations, the biofuel has high energy efficiency and zero emissions level”, the scientist said.

According to Tetyana Kozlovska the assistant professor of KrNu, fixed biogas stations can be used for household heating. “From two to three months of water-bloom of Dnipro can generate enough heat for at least half of the town of Kremenchuk. Such stations can solve the heating issues for the rural population”, she declared.

Mihail Elizarov the assistant professor of KrNu, is sure that installation of biogas stations near the water supply inlets not only will partially solve the energy needs but will improve the ecological state of rivers, he adds: “refining the artificially impounded water bodies with the help of biogas stations will help fisheries and will purify drinking water for city supply for the towns situated on the banks of the river Dnipro”.
